This threat is the second announced in Gaza. Previously, another anonymous group, the Army of the Sword of the Right, also threatened to attack Christians and churches in response to remarks made by the Pope when he quoted a 14th-century text describing Islam as “evil and inhuman.”
An estimated 4,500 Christians live among more than 1.3 million Muslims in the Gaza Strip. A Christian leader in Gaza City said they had appealed to the Palestinian Authority for protection. Christians are keeping a very low profile and many would like to leave the area for fear of their lives,” he said.
The same kind of threat was made by the Mujahideen Shura Council, an Iraqi militant group led by Al-Qaeda. In an Internet statement, the group threatened attacks on the “worshippers of the cross,” because of the remarks made by the Pope. They said, “You have no other choice but Islam or death. We shall break the cross and spill the wine,” they said.
