Most of the Holocaust survivors had been incarcerated in various concentration camps and many still had their “camp numbers” on their arms. At the instructions of Rabbi Shmuel Rabinovitch, the Rabbi of the Kotel, all the survivors were told to put their arm tephillin [used during morning prayers as instructed in Deut. 6:5–8] on the arm that bore their concentration camp number applied by the Nazis.
