Second Unveiling of 1,700-year-old Mosaic

The amazingly well-preserved, archaeological gem covers approximately 180 square meters (1,937 square feet) of colored “carpets” that depict mammals, birds, fish, flora, and ships of that era. The purpose of the building in which the mosaic floor was placed is not known.
When first uncovered, some 30,000 people visited the site during one weekend, but it was covered to protect it from being damaged until funding was available and a decision as to how to best present it to the public was made. A recent, highly generous gift has now enabled IAA to finish the excavation and conservation work and begin the establishing of the Lod Mosaic Archaeological Center.
