4,000-year-old Graves Found

A shaft grave is a grave entered through the roof from a shaft several feet deep, dug from the ground surface. The shaft could be covered by flat rock slabs or a waterproof seal made with timbers, reeds, or twigs and clay. After a burial, the shaft was filled with earth and marked with stones or a stela.
