Limonana, a Refreshing Beverage

When summer heats up in Israel, limonana (frozen mint lemonade) becomes the drink of choice. The combination of lemons and spearmint (nana in Hebrew) is cool and refreshing, even on the hottest of days. Whether served as a slushy blend or over ice, it is the perfect companion to a spot in the shade for an afternoon break.
Blended Mint Lemonade
½ c. freshly squeezed lemon juice from about 4 lemons plus lemon peel for garnish
¼ c. loosely packed mint leaves (with stems discarded) plus a few extra sprigs for garnish
⅓ to ½ c. fine sugar to taste (sugar substitutes or honey may be used instead)
1 c. cold water
3 c. large ice cubes
Directions:
Place all of the ingredients, except ice cubes, in a blender and run on high speed until well mixed. If the mint leaves are not finely blended, it is best to run the mixture through a strainer. Add the ice cubes and blend until crushed thoroughly. Pour into glasses and serve with optional mint leaves and lemon peel garnish. If preferred as a drink rather than a slushy, increase the amount of water and serve with ice cubes to chill. Top with garnish.
