This week he stated publicly for the first time that Israel has not agreed to the Board of Peace’s Hamas disarmament plan, insisting that Israeli forces will not withdraw from their current lines in Gaza until Hamas is completely disarmed—a stance he’s holding even as he manages delicate Lebanon negotiations and heads into an election campaign.

At home, the long-standing and deeply emotional debate over ultra-Orthodox military service continues to divide the nation and strain Netanyahu’s coalition. Former Likud ministers Gilad Erdan and Yuli Edelstein are set to launch a new right-wing party on Thursday centered on ending yeshiva (religious school) draft exemptions, an issue on which Edelstein broke from Likud last month. In a related sign of the coalition’s fragmentation, fellow Likud MK (member of Knesset/Parliament) Dan Illouz also announced this week that he’s leaving the party over the same issue, joining the opposition Yisrael Beytenu (Israel Our Home) faction. With elections scheduled for October 27, Netanyahu is holding together a broad coalition while carrying the weight of this debate within Israeli society, alongside disarmament negotiations in Gaza and Lebanon.

Lebanon: Technical teams from Israel and Lebanon began a second round of US-brokered talks in Rome on Tuesday, working through Thursday on Hezbollah’s disarmament, IDF redeployment and border arrangements. A key sticking point is who will verify that areas cleared by the Lebanese Armed Forces are actually free of Hezbollah fighters and weapons. Israel initially insisted on doing so itself but backed off after strong Lebanese objections, and both sides are now discussing alternatives (possibly including Italy) rather than extending the mandate of the UN’s peacekeeping force, UNIFIL, which both Israel and the US oppose. Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem denounced the talks as bringing Lebanon only “shame” and vowed Israel’s “complete withdrawal,” while Israel simultaneously launched fresh strikes on Hezbollah targets Wednesday, citing ceasefire violations and issuing a rare evacuation warning for a Lebanese village. 

Gaza: The US-backed Board of Peace appeared to shift its terms for an IDF pullback after meeting with Prime Minister Netanyahu, now saying withdrawal beyond the Yellow Line will only happen once Hamas’s full disarmament—light weapons, heavy weapons and tunnels alike—is complete. That marks a shift from earlier language, though given Hamas’s long record of breaking agreements, the terrorist group hardly needs an excuse to abandon this one too. Netanyahu has said Israel will not hold its fire or withdraw while Hamas remains armed, and has pushed back on parts of the plan it wasn’t consulted on, including the inclusion of Qatar and Turkey on the international body overseeing disarmament.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) began a new recruitment cycle to bring thousands of new recruits into the military. The IDF holds three major recruitment cycles each year, in August, March and November/December. This August cycle is the largest of the year and will strengthen the IDF’s combat units, particularly infantry, artillery, combat engineering, armored and intelligence units, amid ongoing tension with Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon.

An IDF soldier was seriously wounded on Tuesday during a shooting exercise during basic training in the Jordan Valley. He was taken to the hospital for treatment. The incident is under investigation, but initial reports say he was wounded by an accidentally charged round.

Beyond the dangers soldiers face in training and combat, many carry the weight of trauma home with them. Friends of the IDF (FIDF) has been expanding its mental health support network, having distributed over US $132 million in 2025—its largest annual allocation in 44 years—with a major share directed toward mental health care and PTSD treatment for soldiers, reservists and veterans. FIDF’s national director, Nadav Padan, has said the organization began prioritizing this care after seeing reservists return from Gaza and Lebanon with no one attending to their psychological wounds.

A 30-year-old Israeli man died by suicide on Saturday at the grave of his close friend who was murdered at the Nova music festival on October 7, 2023. Bar Asaf could not cope with the loss of Liron Barda and the loneliness he felt after losing her. His sister told Ynetnews that he didn’t sleep, speak or eat for a week after her death, but he slowly started to come back to life over time. Asaf had attended his brother’s wedding three days before, and his family said there were no signs that anything was wrong.

Shiran Maor, chairman of SafeHeart, an organization that provides mental health support for Nova survivors and their families, told the Jerusalem Post: “Trauma doesn’t just affect the survivors. Partners, parents, family members and friends carry immense pain as well, coping with the aftermath of loss and trauma.” Asaf is one of what SafeHeart CEO Efrat Atun call’s “first-and-a-half-degree victims”—people who weren’t there to experience the trauma in person but who still experienced it live while talking to their loved ones on the phone. Asaf is “not the first suicide among these first-and-a-half-degree victims,” she noted. Atun told eJewishPhilanthropy that in addition to October 7 survivors and veterans, people who fit into this periphery category need help, as well as the families of survivors who walk with their traumatized loved ones through the aftermath.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres, whose second and final term is winding down, drew fresh criticism this week for what Israeli officials call a glaring double standard. During a visit to Syria on July 25, Guterres declared that Israel’s presence beyond the 1974 buffer zone in the Golan Heights violates Syrian sovereignty and “must stop.” Two days later, in Cyprus, he spoke only vaguely of a “Cyprus issue” needing resolution, never mentioning Turkey’s 52-year occupation of northern Cyprus, despite multiple UN Security Council resolutions condemning it.

Israeli Ambassador to the UN Danny Danon said Guterres “continues to apply a blatant double standard toward Israel,” noting that Turkey’s occupation draws only “vague calls for cooperation” while Israel faces immediate condemnation. When JNS pressed UN spokesman Farhan Haq on the inconsistency, he said that “it would take hours, possibly days, for me to explain to you fully the differences between the situation in Cyprus and the situation in the Golan Heights,” adding that the UN’s stance is “consistent with the policies that the UN has had, basically, for the past 50 years in each of those cases.”

Jonathan Conricus of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies said the episode reflects “systemic bias against Israel” throughout the UN. Guterres, who has drawn scrutiny since appearing to justify the October 7 attacks, remains persona non grata in Israel.

Author and political scientist Norman Finkelstein appeared on anti-Israel influencer Hasan Piker’s podcast and denied that Hamas terrorists committed sexual violence on October 7, 2023—even challenging an in-depth report on the rape and sexual violence that day, based on testimonials from victims and eyewitnesses. For more information, view the 282-page “Silenced No More” report that Finkelstein is disputing or the “Screams Before Silence” documentary that also describes the sexual violence through survivor, eyewitness and first responder testimony. The “believe all victims” slogan applies to Jewish women as well.

Britain’s Community Security Trust (CST) recorded 1,926 antisemitic incidents in the first half of 2026, the second-highest six-month total on record, trailing only early 2024’s 2,109 incidents. CST says the figures confirm that antisemitism has “stabilized” at levels far above pre-October 7 norms, with 41% of incidents, alongside anti-Jewish language, referencing Israel, Gaza or the war. Physical attacks nearly doubled to 7% of cases, including an arson attack on a Reform synagogue and the torching of Jewish rescue ambulances.

A group of neo-Nazis gathered outside a hotel in Bulgaria on Sunday, blocking entrances, flashing the Nazi salute and shouting “Sieg Heil” at dozens of Jewish teenagers from Israel and Italy staying there for an international youth program. Police dispersed the group, which returned to resume harassment once the officers left. This was less than a week after another incident in Bulgaria when British tourists attacked Israeli teenage tourists. Bulgarian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani stated: “I condemn antisemitism, a virus that must be fought, a form of hatred and discrimination that must be eradicated.”

Six new ambassadors from four continents presented their credentials to Israeli President Isaac Herzog on Monday, representing Sri Lanka, Georgia, Nigeria, Germany, Chile and Honduras, with the Honduran embassy being based in Jerusalem.

A special project bridging the gap between Jewish and Arab teenagers wrapped up last week: a Cooking Peace summer camp at the Ben Shemen Youth Village in central Israel. About 40 teens attended, with staff from Arab, Jewish and ultra-Orthodox backgrounds, using food as a bridge to discuss their differences and commonalities. A 15-year-old Arab Muslim girl told the Jerusalem Post that she had a conversation with a Jewish boy, sharing information about their religions and correcting misconceptions about each other’s faith. A Jewish teen said the group formed real bonds and didn’t avoid hard conversations, adding that he expects some friendships to last for years. One of the camp’s chefs said cooking together was a valuable exercise in cooperation, noting that working side by side helped campers from different backgrounds understand each other better.

A special flight brought 140 new immigrants from France to Israel on Monday, including young families and 80 infants, children and teens. Aliyah (immigration to Israel) is up 30% over last year, with 2,400 French immigrants arriving so far this year, per the Ministry of Aliyah and Integration and the Jewish Agency. Ynetnews reports over 7,000 Jews have immigrated from France since October 7, 2023, amid rising antisemitism there. The Jewish Agency says roughly 80,000 Jews worldwide have opened immigration files since October 7, with 20,000 of them from France.
