Wisdom from Above: Praying for Israel’s Leaders

What You Need to Know:

PM Netanyahu is not in a particularly enviable position at the moment. His political opposition claims that US-led negotiations with Iran are putting Israel’s security on the line. As he has demonstrated many times, US President Trump demands complete and unquestioning loyalty from his allies, including PM Netanyahu. A seasoned leader, PM Netanyahu undoubtedly has determined his “red lines” of compromise with the US and knows at which point he will say, “This far and no further.” Israel’s security has been at the forefront of the prime minister’s agenda throughout his decades in politics. He will not put that at risk.
Foreign Minister Sa’ar and Israeli ambassadors to nations around the world are leaders in the sense that they are Israel’s frontline representatives on the global stage. At the annual memorial ceremony for members of the Foreign Service who died during active duty, Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar said, “Those who represent Israel in the world are exposed to the evil spirit of antisemitism, which is rearing its head again in a worrying and ugly way.” According to FM Sa’ar, since October 7, 2023, “about 30 attacks and attempted attacks have been carried out against our embassies and diplomats around the world.” Iran has been behind most of these, Sa’ar said, as the regime is working to spread chaos and terrorism across the globe.

Pray with Purpose
  • Continue to pray for PM Netanyahu as he leads the nation through difficult and challenging times.
  • Pray for Israel’s ambassadors and other visible representatives outside the Land, asking for the Lord’s had of protection on them and their families.
  • Pray for a fear of the Lord to be present in Israel’s government and leadership.

What You Need to Know:

Iran: The US informed Israel that the ceasefire deadline with Iran, previously set to expire on April 21, has been extended. Reports show conflicting statements on the length of that extension. It is nearly impossible to predict what will happen in the coming days. Ynetnews reported that “Israeli officials expressed skepticism than an agreement would be reached by the new deadline, as both sides continue to hold firm positions in negotiations, at least publicly.” The Strait of Hormuz remains an active point of contention, with a continued blockade by the US navy, while Iran has reportedly detained several ships.

Hezbollah/Lebanon: A 10-day ceasefire agreement that went into effect on April 16 was violated when Hezbollah fired a rocket at IDF troops and launched a drone into Israeli territory. The purpose of the agreement was to halt active fighting and establish conditions where permanent peace could be negotiated. Israel and Lebanon held direct talks last week for the first time since 1993. Israel continues to question whether the Lebanese government has the ability—or the will—to disarm Hezbollah.
Judea/Samaria: Weapons and explosives used in the recent terror attack on the Israeli community of Karmei Tzur were discovered in a Palestinian school in the town of Beit Ummar, a short distance away. Karmei Tzur, which has been the target of many terror attacks, lies roughly between Hebron and Bethlehem.

Pray with Purpose:
  • Continue praying that the Lord will cover Israel with protection from Iran’s plans for her destruction.
  • Pray that Israel’s security agents embedded within hostile countries will escape detection.
  • Continue to pray for the Jewish residents of Judea and Samaria, especially as they move ahead with plans to establish new communities in the biblical heartland.

Frontline Faith: Praying for Israel’s Soldiers

What You Need to Know:

Since Yom HaZikaron (Memorial Day) was observed this week, much of the media focus has been on the soldiers and security personnel who have laid down their lives in defense of the nation. One such account involves Warrant Officer (res.) Barak Kalfon, who was killed just hours after the recent 10-day ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah took effect. Kalfon was killed in an explosion during a check for weapons in a building in a southern Lebanese village. At 48, Kalfon was over the age required for reserve service, but he insisted on volunteering. Defense Minister Israel Katz eulogized Kalfon: “Barak was a courageous and dedicated fighter and exemplary family man. In his civilian work as an engineer at Rafael [state-owned defense firm], he contributed significantly to the security of the State of Israel, and combined a first-rate professional sense of duty with significant reserve service and many years of defending Israel.”

Not all soldiers serve in combat units. Recognizable by their distinctive orange berets, members of the IDF’s Home Front Command units protect Israeli civilians in a number of ways. First and foremost, their mission is to save lives. Whether by maintaining an early warning system for incoming missile launches or leading search and rescue missions at impact sites, their mission is simple: to save lives. Maj. Gen. Rafi Milo leads the Home Front Command as they operate in both routine and emergency situations, preparing Israel’s population for anything that comes their way.

Pray with Purpose:
  • Pray for the men and women of the IDF as they serve in a variety of roles to defend the nation and protect the vulnerable.
  • Ask the Lord to comfort those who mourn in Zion: families of fallen soldiers as well as victims of terror.
  • Pray for the commanders, from the IDF Chief of Staff Zamir to the leader of the smallest unit, that they will model the IDF’s fundamental values to their troops.

What You Need to Know:

It has been over six months since the last living Israeli hostages were released from Hamas captivity on October 13, 2025. Alon Ohel was one of the 20 who came home that day. In an interview with Ynetnews, Alon and his mother Idit talked about their journey and the healing that is still taking place. Alon told Ynetnews: “I have a long recovery ahead of me. I’m dealing with traumas you read about in books, and also with the fact that I can’t see in one eye [due to an untreated wound while in captivity].” The tragic events of October 7 have an ongoing impact on every Israeli. Idit summed it up as follows: “Amid all our personal joy at Alon’s return, we do not for a moment forget all those who lost their lives and the soldiers who sacrificed their physical and mental health. I think about the reservists and their spouses who carry this heavy burden. They are my heroes.”

Last week’s sudden announcement of a 10-day ceasefire between Hezbollah and Israel did not sit well with residents of Israel’s northern communities. Avichai Stern, mayor of Kiryat Shmona, told reporters that it was a “false quiet” that would fail to deliver fundamental change. “For over two years, our children have suffered from instability, evacuation and prolonged stay in shelters, without any security solution on the horizon.” The mayor, along with 10 busloads of residents, came to Jerusalem and held a protest outside the US embassy compound on April 19.

  • Continue to pray for the complete healing of both physical and emotional wounds suffered by the hostages as well as their families.
  • Pray for the protection and safety of Israel’s northern communities on the frontlines of the battle with Hezbollah.
  • Pray also for the residents of Judea and Samaria, another potentially dangerous area for Jewish people.

Aligning Against Israel: UN and the Nations of the World

What You Need to Know:

Israel has always been singled out among the countries of the world. For example, Israel’s membership in the United Nations did not come without a fight. The nation’s first application, submitted on May 15, 1948, was ignored. On December 17, 1948, the UN Security Council rejected the second application by a vote of 5-to-1 with 5 abstentions. It was not until May 11, 1949, that the UN General Assembly voted to admit Israel as a member state. Even then, Israel’s membership was conditional upon its acceptance of the Partition Plan, which called for Jerusalem to be internationally governed. It would be fair to say that no other nation was subjected to such a rigorous membership process.

When the foreign ministers of the European Union (EU) met this week in Luxembourg, one topic of discussion was the proposal, brought forward by Spain, to suspend the EU–Israel Association Agreement. The EU is Israel’s largest trading partner, and the agreement—which has been in effect since 2005—saves Israel approximately US $1 billion in tax dispensations annually. The motion, which required a majority vote, failed to gain traction due to the opposition of Germany, Italy and the Czech Republic. After the meeting, Kaya Kallas, vice president of the European Commission, told reporters that discussions on EU–Israel relations would continue. The EU supports a two-state solution and has also considered sanctions against the Israeli settlers of Judea and Samaria, until now opposed by Viktor Orbán, Hungarian prime minister. After his recent electoral loss, the Hungarian government may not choose to shield Israel from EU sanctions.

Pray with Purpose:
  • Pray that the people of Israel will be steadfast and strong, trusting in God as they face accusations from hostile nations.
  • Pray for Danny Danon, Israel’s ambassador to the UN, and all the diplomats on the frontlines who must confront an anti-Israel bias as they carry out their duties.

Standing against Hate: Combatting Antisemitism in Prayer

Fire is a weapon in terror arson attacks, like those recently targeting Jewish buildings in London (illustrative). (Photo Credit: Alexas Fotos/Pixabay.com)
What You Need to Know:

United Kingdom: Over the past week, there have been three arson attacks against Jewish sites in the London area. Police are investigating the possibility that Iran is directing the attempts. The targets included two synagogues, a Jewish business and Volant Media, a Persian-language media outlet which opposes the Iranian regime. Britain’s Chief Rabbi called the most recent attack part of “a sustained campaign of violence and intimidation against the Jewish community of the UK … a sustained attack on our community’s ability to worship and live in safety.”

Sweden: Ziv Nevo Kulman, Israel’s ambassador to Sweden, warned that antisemitism is being tolerated on the streets of Stockholm in the name of freedom of expression. For example, Kulman cited an online video showing “a scene appearing to depict a Jewish man … threatening to slit the throat of a Palestinian woman, as the crowd chanted, ‘Crush Zionism.’”
Positive Response: In a recent interview with Ynetnews, Dr. Shelley Kedar of the Jewish Agency (JA) discussed a JA report that surveyed young Jews around the world. In the aftermath of October 7, antisemitism and hostility toward Israel have increased, yet 74% of those surveyed “believe they can positively shape the future.” They feel a stronger connection both to Israel and to the Jewish communities in their own countries and are not willing to retreat in the face of antisemitism. Kedar said: “We’re actually not going to normalize antisemitism. We’re going to stand up.”

Pray with Purpose:
  • Pray that law enforcement authorities around the world will respond strongly to acts of antisemitism and will not turn a blind eye.
  • Pray for opportunities to stand up and defend Jewish communities that have been victims of antisemitism.

Pray that the Jewish community outside of Israel will catch the vision of aliyah (immigration) to the Land of their forefathers.

Grateful Hearts: Praise Reports from the Land

What You Need to Know:

The head of a Jewish day school was unprepared for the resilience and commitment in a group of young American teens he was leading on a tour when they were caught in Israel during the war. Mark Shpall writes: “Today’s teenagers are often described as fragile or ill-equipped to face adversity … that young American Jews are increasingly distant from Israel, even ambivalent about its future.” Shpall continues: “Experience revealed something powerful [about the students]… What I saw in those shelters was not panic. It was grit. It was strength. It was solidarity.” The teens reluctantly returned to America, but they will remain connected to Israel in a way that would not have been possible had they not experienced, in addition to the sirens and shelters, “the kindness of strangers and the sense of community they felt with Israelis.”

Since Argentina elected Javier Milei as the nation’s president in November 2023, he has been a staunch and vocal supporter of the Jewish state. He arrived in Israel on April 19, marking his third visit since taking office. His first official stop: prayer at the Western Wall. In addition to being the first foreign leader to light a torch at Israel’s official Independence Day ceremony on Tuesday evening, President Milei is scheduled to receive the Presidential Medal of Honor as well as an honorary doctorate from Bar-Ilan University. President Milei has taken a number of steps that show the depth of his commitment, including the expulsion of the Iranian ambassador from Buenos Aires.

Pray with Purpose:
  • Praise the Lord for the connection the young Jewish students felt to the land and people of Israel, and pray that they will desire to return to the place God has promised as their inheritance.
  • Give thanks for the stalwart leadership of Pres. Milei, praying that the pro-Israel foundation he is laying will remain after his term of office has ended.
  • Praise and proclaim the Lord’s faithfulness to His word, as the modern State of Israel recently celebrated its 78th birthday.
