What You Need to Know:

In a speech given April 15, PM Netanyahu addressed on two important issues: Iran and Hezbollah, its Lebanese terror proxy. Israel has not been directly involved in the negotiations with Iran but the prime minister gave the following assurance: “Our American friends are updating us constantly on their contacts with Iran. Our goals and those of the United States are identical: We want to see the enriched material removed from Iran, we want to see the cancellation of enrichment capabilities within Iran, and of course, we want to see the opening of the straits. It is too early to say how this matter will end, or even how it will progress. In anticipation of the possibility that fighting may resume, we are prepared for any scenario.”

At Israel’s insistence, the issue of Hezbollah was not included in the Iranian talks. However, Israel is facing some pressure from the US to stop the fighting. Along those lines, Pres. Trump announced that PM Benjamin Netanyahu and Lebanese President Joseph Aoun would hold talks on Thursday, the first direct communication between the countries’ leaders in 34 years. The key issue is whether the Lebanese government is willing and able to disarm Hezbollah, which “maintains significant military power and can act independently of the Lebanese government.” Israel’s top priority is to ensure the security of the communities along the Lebanese border.

Pray with Purpose
  • Pray that Israel will not make any concessions in these talks with Lebanon that would compromise the security of her northern residents.
  • Continue to pray for Chief of Staff, Lt. Gen. Zamir and IDF commanders as they maintain a state of readiness for any outcome of the current negotiations.
  • Pray for Foreign Minister Sa’ar and all Israel’s ambassadors as they defend the nation on the world stage.
  • Pray that Israel’s leaders will have hearts to seek wisdom from God.

What You Need to Know:

Iran: The primary focal point for Israel’s security revolves around the actions of the Iranian regime which has been relentless in its goal of eliminating the Jewish presence in the Middle East. Although Israel has been in a holding pattern as the US negotiates the terms of a permanent ceasefire, the IDF remains on a high state of alert, ready to return to the battle if negotiations fail.

Hezbollah/Lebanon: Much of the IDF’s ground offensive this past week has taken place in the Hezbollah stronghold of Bint Jbeil. A stadium in this town was the site of a speech in 2000 by Hezbollah’s slain leader Hassan Nasrallah who said, “Israel is a cobweb filled with spiders that must be exterminated.” Brig. Gen. Guy Levy, commander of the 98th Paratroopers told reporters: “Today, that man is gone, the compound is gone, and his words are worth nothing.”

Judea/Samaria: An incident at a checkpoint in Samaria this week demonstrated the vigilance Israeli security forces must maintain as they disrupted a smuggling attempt when they discovered a number of Palestinians hiding inside a garbage truck. Most may have been trying to enter illegally for economic reasons but a few could have been attempting to infiltrate Israel as terrorists.

In addition, the IDF’s counter-terrorism activities continue to take place in Judea and Samaria. A bomb manufacturing lab with more than 110 pounds of explosive material and approximately 200 pipe bombs was discovered in the city of Tulkarem and dismantled by the IDF.

Pray with Purpose:
  • Pray that the troops guarding the borders of Israel will remain alert and vigilant, especially during the ceasefire period.
  • Pray that Israel’s intelligence gathering sources will be successful in locating other weapons manufacturing sites for dismantling by the IDF.
  • Pray for all those who stand guard at checkpoints, asking the Lord to give them insight into which vehicles to search.

Frontline Faith: Praying for Israel’s Soldiers

What You Need to Know:

The IDF is a microcosm of Israeli society, reflecting the diversity of the modern State of Israel. Observant, secular, kibbutzniks and city dwellers, all are drafted out of high school and enter the world of the people’s army. The haredi (ultra-Orthodox) draft issue has been widely publicized over the past few years, mainly focused on protests that sometimes turn violent. But religious soldiers do serve in special units and roles where they can maintain a Torah-observant lifestyle. Women too.

Religious women have begun serving in combat roles as part of a special pilot program in the IDF’s Combat Intelligence Collection Corps. The groundbreaking program has faced challenges of creating an environment where the women can follow Torah without being asked to compromise their faith. One recent graduate from basic training said, “Halacha (Jewish law) isn’t black and white. You don’t drive on Shabbat just for nothing, but if it’s for an operational mission, we do it. What keeps me going is the girls with me. Because we’re all religious, it’s understood there’s no music [on Shabbat]. It just makes everything easier.” Another soldier described her experience in combat intelligence operations, “It goes beyond what we imagined. There’s a real feeling that we are truly defending the country.”

In conclusion, “S” said, “We don’t want a unit only of religious women. We don’t feel different from other soldiers. We just wanted a place that respects our lifestyle. If you believe in what you believe, there’s no reason it will change in the army.”

Pray with Purpose:
  • Pray for the commanders and officers of the IDF as they lead the young men and women in defense of the nation.
  • Pray for the protection of all soldiers as they may encounter life or death situations at any time.
  • Continue to pray for the reservists and their families as they put aside their civilian life, put on their uniforms and pick up their guns.

Lifting the Weary: Praying for Israel’s People

Each month Bridges for Peace delivers food parcels to Holocaust survivors in Jerusalem (illustrative). (Photo Credit: Chloe Kaltoum/Bridges for Peace)
What You Need to Know:

This week Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day) was observed in Israel. Due to the security situation and uncertainty about whether or not the current ceasefire with Iran would hold, many ceremonies were scaled back and even pre-recorded so participants could watch the memorial speeches and candle-lighting from their homes. Israel is home to roughly half the worldwide population of Holocaust survivors, who are aging. In anticipation of the day when there will be no more living survivors, an organization called Shem VeNer (Name and Candle) has begun to encourage people to take up the banner and choose to remember someone who died by lighting a memorial candle in their name. According their website, “Soon, sadly, no survivors will remain to tell their stories in their own voices. The torch of remembrance is being placed in our hands now—to hold, to honor, and to carry forward.”

For practical assistance, each month Bridges for Peace provides food to a number of Holocaust survivors living in Israel. Click here to bless a Holocaust survivor.

In many ways we are witnessing a return to those dark days just before six million European Jews were killed by Hitler’s Nazi regime. As Gentiles, we don’t often think about what it must be like to be marked as “different,” to wear a bulls-eye on your back as it were. Sharon Pardo’s article, “The Menorah at the European Check-In Counter,” gives an insightful and thought-provoking look into what it is like to be Jewish in Europe today.

Pray with Purpose:
  • Pray that the Holocaust survivors and their descendants would be remembered each day and not just on the day of the official observance.
  • Pray for residents of northern Israel who are still experiencing sirens, missile launches and drone attacks from Lebanon.
  • Pray for the teachers and children who are just now reestablishing their school routines.

Aligning Against Israel: UN and the Nations of the World

What You Need to Know:

It was a difficult week for Israel and its international relationships. Relations with three friendly European nations suffered setbacks. Viktor Orban, a staunch friend of PM Netanyahu, lost his bid for another term as Hungary’s president. Orban consistently backed Israel on the world stage and even withdrew Hungary’s membership in the International Criminal Court over its charges against Israeli leaders.

When German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who has staunchly supported Israel, expressed “deep concern” over new communities in Judea and Samaria, finance minister Bezalel Smotrich posted, “You will not force us into ghettos again.” Israel’s ambassador to Germany, Ron Prosor, quickly responded by publicly condemning Smotrich’s remark. In addition, Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, announced that her nation would not be renewing a defense contract held with Israel since 2005. Meloni, another friend of Israel’s, is facing internal pressure from political opponents.

After four failed attempts last summer to challenge the Israeli blockade of Gaza, yet another flotilla has left Spain. And although 2025’s efforts did not succeed in reaching Gaza, the negative publicity garnered by the “Freedom Flotillas” proved difficult for Israel to counteract. Although all were purportedly bringing humanitarian aid to the Gazan population, little evidence was found to support that claim. This week, forty boats set out from Barcelona with plans for others to join along the way, reaching an estimated total of 70 vessels. Once again, Israel will have a challenge to dispel the false accusations that will surely appear in days to come.

Pray with Purpose:
  • Pray that Israel’s relationship with Germany does not suffer permanent damage over the remark made against her chancellor, a friend of Israel’s.
  • Pray that plans for the new flotilla will fall apart before the vessels reach their destination.
  • Pray for Israel’s international relationships, asking that world leaders will stand firm against antisemitic pressure from minority groups in their nations.

Standing against Hate: Combatting Antisemitism in Prayer

A fundraiser for Magen David Adom’s emergency services in Israel was canceled twice by Dublin’s National Concert Hall (illustrative). (Photo Credit: Nathan Williams/Bridges for Peace)
What You Need to Know:

Issued on April 13, the Tel Aviv Univ. antisemitism report is the gold standard, so to speak, as it compiles information from multiple countries and sources. The report’s chief editor expressed concern that the consistently high level of antisemitic incidents “is becoming normalized reality.” The report is widely quoted by media outlets and contains specific information on a country-by-country basis.

A fundraiser for Magen David Adom (MDA) Ireland was canceled a second time by Dublin’s National Concert Hall (NCH). The concert was to be “a narrator’s reading of accounts of survivors and victims of Hamas’s Oct. 7 massacres in Israel.” Proceeds of ticket sales would have gone to support MDA’s civilian rescue service in Israel. Alan Shatter, who heads MDA Ireland, said, “The event’s cancellation by the NCH can be properly described as an act of antisemitic censorship.”

When Ohio resident Daniel Grand opened his home to a group of 10 neighbors for Shabbat prayer services, it drew the ire of his neighbor who complained to the city. The city issued a cease-and-desist order prohibiting Grand from using his house for prayer. The National Jewish Advocacy Center (NJAC) has filed a brief with the US Supreme Court stating, “This case deserves Supreme Court review because, across the country, Jewish religious practice has repeatedly been constrained through the neutral application of rules in ways that disproportionately burden visible Jewish life.”

Pray with Purpose:
  • Pray for the physical safety of Jews who are living outside the Land of Israel, and for the protection of visibly Jewish locations such as synagogues.
  • Pray that any discrimination against Judaism as it is practiced in homes will be exposed and put to a stop.
  • Pray for opportunities to stand in solidarity with the Jewish community.

Grateful Hearts: Praise Reports from the Land

What You Need to Know:

When Iraq launched Scud missiles at Israel’s population centers during the Gulf War in the early 1990s, the nation had no defense. Now, the words “Iron Dome” bring Israelis a sense of security, of being protected. Since its first interception of a Grad missile fired by Hamas at the southern city of Sderot, the Iron Dome has “significantly reduced casualties and property damage during periods of conflict.” Recently the Iron Dome reached an amazing statistic: During the 15 years it has been in use to defend Israeli citizens, the Iron Dome has intercepted more than 10,000 missiles launched by hostile elements, primarily at non-military targets. Its success rate exceeds 90%, making the Iron Dome a “star” in Israel’s array of missile defense systems.

Israelis have always been known as innovators, people who “think outside the box” when problem solving. Water scarcity is a global challenge and agriculture accounts for 70% of the freshwater used in the world. Conventional irrigation methods are inefficient as the use of multiple sprinklers results in coverage overlap and over-watering. BSprinkler, an Israeli startup, has developed a sprinkler for agricultural use that will “reduce water use by substantial margins.” While BSprinkler’s system looks similar, it uses a “patented mechanical mechanism that …can adjust its range and be configured to match the exact shape of a given area, even if it is asymmetrical.”

Pray with Purpose:
  • Give thanks for the ingenuity behind the development of the Iron Dome, and other defensive weapons that protect Israeli citizens.
  • Give thanks for the ingenuity behind BSprinkler’s technology that is benefitting the whole world through making efficient irrigation practices possible.
  • Praise the Lord for His people who consistently “choose life.”

I call heaven and earth as witnesses today against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore choose life, that both you and your descendants may live. (Deuteronomy 30:19)
