A Permanent Solution for ADHD Sufferers?

An estimated 51.1 million children globally suffer from attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), a brain condition marked by impaired concentration, hyperactivity and impulsivity with no regards to consequences. While there is at present no cure for ADHD, treatment options like medication, psychotherapy, counseling and lifestyle changes can help reduce the symptoms and improve day-to-day functionality—with varying degrees of success. Yet what if there was an option that could go from “care” to “cure?”

According to Israeli start-up InnoSphere, its patented wearable cap may very well offer millions of ADHD sufferers worldwide a more permanent solution. The InnoSphere device, which is placed on a patient’s head much like a cap, is outfitted with dry electrodes that provide accurate and effective stimulation to precisely targeted regions of the brain that play a role in ADHD behavior. The non-invasive, gentle and precise electrical stimulation of the affected brain regions boosts neural activity and enables the brain to form the connections that the brain of an ADHD patient is unable to make on its own.

“We give the neurons a nudge to talk to other neurons in the brain, to communicate better,” InnoSphere Founder and CEO Rami Shacour explained to Israel21c.

According to the Israeli start-up, the benefits of InnoSphere go well beyond that of traditional ADHD treatment. Instead of simply managing the symptoms, the device targets the root cause. The treatment is also non-invasive and has no side effects. Moreover, the brain stimulation treatment protocols can be customized to suit each patient’s individual needs. Lastly, treatment entails three 20-minute sessions per week, which means minimal disruption of patients’ daily routines.

If all goes according to plan, the InnoSphere device will be ready for use by doctors and psychologists in 2022. The Israeli start-up does, however, aim to make the device available for home-use by ADHD patients.
