Thursday, 9 July 2020 | Thursday, 9 July 2020 | An Israeli medical technology company has developed a coronavirus testing kit that can give a result in half an hour, its chief scientist said.
By using different enzymes in the test kits, AID Genomics can diagnose small batches of virus test kits in about 30 minutes and larger batches in about 60, said the company’s chief scientist, Izhak Haviv.
Haviv envisions sending their test kits—which are reportedly just as accurate as other test kits currently in use even though the testing time is much shorter—around the world.
“To process a planeload of passengers would take me 75 minutes, and I can push it down to an hour,” Haviv told the Times of Israel. He spoke about his hopes that the improved testing kits will help the world return to a more normal routine by allowing big groups of people to be tested, for example, before entering a stadium or large complex for a sporting or entertainment event.
The testing process of inserting a swab into the test patient’s nose will remain the same, but the different enzyme will change how the patient sample is analyzed and tested.
“We worked on this for three months,” Haviv said. “Now we have an actual tool that is 50 times more sensitive than test kits produced until now.”
The medi-tech company has already sent its kit to the US Food and Drug Administration as well as other organizations for approval before ramping up production and distribution.
AID Genomics specializes in diagnosing and treating cancer “and infectious diseases like COVID-19,” according to its website.
This is another example of Israel, nicknamed “the start-up nation,” utilizing its technological savvy to bless the world. The Jewish state during the height of the pandemic was named one of the top ten safest places to live as COVID-19 raged across the world.
