Lebanon and Syria Sign 17 New Bilateral Agreements

Despite the spate of new agreements, border issues that the two nations agreed to settle as far back as 2008 remain unaddressed.  

Western nations including the United States have been pressing for an agreement on border issues as part of the effort to prevent the smuggling of weapons from Syria to Hizbullah in Lebanon. But Syria has continually refused to address the issue. According to the Beirut Daily Star, the latest excuse offered by Damascus is that there is a demarcation process under way with Jordan that must be completed before addressing the issue of the border with Lebanon.
