Wednesday, 7 July 2021 | Yesterday was President Reuven Rivlin’s last full day in office as he completes his seven-year term. Isaac Herzog will be sworn in as Israel’s 11th president at a ceremony held in the Knesset (Parliament) today and Reuven “Ruvi” Rivlin will become a private citizen.
In one of his last official acts, President Rivlin honored the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and the Defense Ministry when he spoke at a farewell event yesterday. It was attended by Defense Minister Benny Gantz, IDF Chief of Staff Aviv Kochavi as well as senior members of the IDF’s general staff.
Rivlin bared his heart to those present as he spoke. “It is a little awkward to announce it here, but you have a president who is in love. In love with our country. In love with the IDF. In love with you. Soldiers and commanders, men and women of the Israel Defense Forces, you are the best. You are my superheroes,” i24News reported.
In addition to the IDF event, President Rivlin received a farewell call from Palestinian Authority (PA) President Mahmoud Abbas. While at the United Nations recently, President Rivlin had publicly called on President Abbas to end the conflict and forget the past.
According to an i24News report, President Abbas’s office released a statement that, “During the phone call, the president expressed his hope that peace between the two sides would be achieved as soon as possible,”
During his lifetime, President Rivlin has worked for peace, understanding and cooperation between people. Born in Jerusalem during the Mandate Period, he has always been an advocate for his country and its citizens—all of them. In a fitting tribute reported by i24News: “both Defense Minister Benny Gantz and Kohavi said that the president was an individual who tried to unite, rather than divide, and who was intimately concerned for the welfare of not just IDF soldiers but of the country as a whole.”
President Isaac Herzog has some big shoes to fill.
