Israel Sends Aid to South Sudan

Israel immediately started airlifting aid and medical supplies to South Sudan through the NGO [non-governmental organization] IsraAID. Also, discussion will soon be underway with the Juba administration to repatriate some 8,000 South Sudanese, mostly Christian citizens, who fled the country during the war between the north and the south in recent years to come to Israel.

It is hoped that Israeli technology and farming methods will help the newly established country to get on to its feet. The economy of South Sudan is one of the weakest in the world. There are many natural resources which, if developed, can stabilize the country. There is also a lot that needs to be done in the health sphere, as South Sudan has one of the highest maternal mortality and female illiteracy rates in the world.

South Sudan exports timber to the international market. The region also contains many natural resources such as oil, iron ore, copper, chromium ore, zinc, silver and gold.
