Fire damage in Neve Tzuf

Friday, 09 December 2016 | Bridges for Peace has been actively involved in helping the victims of last month’s horrendous fires that brought devastation to so many areas across the land of Israel. Because of the love and generosity of Christians, we are able to bring desperately needed assistance, and with it hope, to those devastated by the fires.

Haifa, a northern port city with a population of just under 300,000, was particularly hard hit. Numerous fires surrounded the city and forced the evacuation of more than 60,000 of its residents. Last week we reached out to a youth village by delivering a truckload of blankets. This week, partnering with an Israeli non-profit organization, we helped 50 families who had lost everything in the fire. These families, 150 people including children, were selected by municipal social workers and invited to come to one of the city’s malls. They were then given vouchers (1,000 shekels per person, 4,000 shekels per family) that could be used at any store in the mall to purchase household goods, clothing and other commodities they might need.

Neve Tzuf

Neve Tzuf is a small community in the biblical heartland of Israel. What the world calls the “West Bank” is actually biblical Samaria. This community was established in 1977 and is truly an outpost, surrounded by Arab neighbors. Three fires swept through Neve Tzuf—all were set by arsonists and were acts of terror. The 18 homes that were destroyed belonged to the older residents of the community, including the woman who was a founding member. They lost everything. Bridges for Peace bought refrigerators, clothes dryers and free-standing four-door cupboards for those who lost their homes. The homes are being rebuilt but it will take time. Meanwhile, caravans (temporary mobile homes or trailers) have been moved in to the community.

Bridges for Peace continues to stand with the people of Israel as they are rebuilding their homes and lives. The needs seem overwhelming but we are moving forward in faith that Israel’s Christian friends will not desert her in this time of need. Please see the “Action” item to donate to our Fire Relief project.
