{image_1}A truck carrying 6.5 tons (5.8 metric tons) of potassium nitrate was halted by the Israel Defense Forces at a check point into Judea and Samaria (West Bank) earlier this year. The potassium nitrate was found in sugar bags, disguised as aid from the European Union (EU). The EU has denied any association with the smuggling attempt.

Continue Reading »The Bushehr nuclear power plant in southwestern Iran took a step closer to operability on January 28, as Iranians received the last batch of nuclear fuel from Russia. Some 82 tons [49 metric tons] of nuclear fuel arrived in Iran to allow the facility to start producing electricity. The plant should have been up and running at the end of 2007, but contractual problems led to a considerable delay. Russia said Iran had failed to make payments on time. Besides the fuel for the initial commissioning, auxiliary equipment for the plant also arrived.

{image_1}A new study conducted by the Israel Democracy Institute shows that the secular sector in Israel is shrinking. Only 20% of Jewish Israeli citizens define themselves secular—the lowest number in 34 years. The traditional sector [those somewhat observant to religion] has maintained its dominancy over the last three decades and currently accounts for 47% of the population. The ultra-Orthodox and religious sectors comprise another 33%.

{image_1}Nazi-related graffiti is appearing on synagogues and other buildings throughout Israel in a markedly increased fashion. In September, eight members of a neo-Nazi cell in Petah Tikva were arrested. The cell members were charged with several violent attacks, as well as defacing property, including several synagogues last year. Upon searching their homes, police found neo-Nazi movies, posters, and other materials, as well as weapons such as brass knuckles, knives, and an improvised pistol. The suspects were taken into custody awaiting trial.

{image_1}A Gaza Christian director of an all-Christian bookstore was found murdered in October after he had vanished the day before. The attack came after the ministry associated with the bookstore, the Palestinian Bible Society, was bombed earlier this year. Rami Khader Ayyad, 32, had received death threats prior to the attack, during which he was stabbed and shot. His death was not the first incident of violence toward the 2,500 Christians living in Gaza. An elderly woman was beaten with a club and sharp objects the month prior.
