Tuesday, 8 January 2019 | Israeli security forces arrested a Palestinian terrorist Tuesday morning believed to be involved in two deadly shootings in Judea and Samaria last month.
Assam Barghouti is the terrorist suspected of opening fire at a bus stop outside Givat Assaf on December 12, killing two IDF soldiers and critically wounding another.
The Palestinian terrorist had been on the run since the December shooting that killed 19-year-old Corporal Yosef Cohen and 20-year-old Sergeant Yuval Mor Yosef. In a joint operation, the IDF (Israel Defense Forces), Shin Bet (Israeli internal security organization) and the Israeli Police raided a home in the Abu Shukheidim village north of Ramallah and arrested Barghouti. According to the Jerusalem Post, he was transferred to the Shin Bet for interrogation.
The Shin Bet reported that the terrorist was found with an AK-47 and a large supply of ammunition, planning another attack on Israelis in Judea and Samaria. I24 news reported that Assem Barghouti was released from Israeli prison 10 months ago after serving nearly a decade.
Assam is the older brother of Saleh Barghouti, the perpetrator of the December 9 shooting at the bus station outside Ofra where seven people were injured, including a pregnant woman whose baby was delivered prematurely after the shooting and died three days later. The Shin Bet confirmed that Assam Barghouti participated in that attack as well, just three days earlier and less than two kilometers (1.2 mi.) away from the Givat Assaf shooting.
Security forces conducted a manhunt in the days after the Ofra attack and fatally shot Saleh Barghouti as he attempted to harm the forces while fleeing arrest.
The brothers belong to the infamous Barghouti clan, which has significant terror ties. The brothers’ father, Omar Barghouti, is a senior Hamas member, and their uncle, Nael Barghouti, another Hamas member, is reportedly serving a life sentence in prison.
The Barghouti brothers’ other uncle, Jassar Barghouti, is a senior Hamas member and the man the Palestinian Authority (PA) credits as the mastermind behind the December terrorist attacks in Judea and Samaria.
Prime Minister Netanyahu tweeted his congratulations to the security forces on the arrest: “I congratulate the Shin Bet, the IDF and the [Yamam—Israeli Border Police counterterrorism unit] on the capture of the terrorist who carried out the attack in Givat Assaf and was a partner in the attack in Ofra. The long hand of Israel will reach all those who harm our citizens and the State of Israel will bring them to justice.”
