As children stood at bus stops in southern Israel just before 5:00 p.m. Israel time, terrorists in Gaza began letting loose multiple rockets toward Israel’s residential areas. It is estimated that the number of rockets fired is as high as 45 (as of 6:00 pm Israel time). Some landed within Gaza territory, three were intercepted by the Iron Dome, one hit inside a community and one did damage in a residential area. Red Alerts warning of more rockets in the area are still continuing every few minutes or so. Islamic Jihad is claiming responsibility.
Most of the communities in the Gaza envelope area have bomb shelters at each bus stop and many of the school children are stuck in those shelters, away from their families. The IDF is asking that residents stay in shelters until further notice. There are no reports of physical injuries, but many who live in the area already suffer from PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder) due to years of rocket fire from Gaza and EMS is reporting that they are treating cases of hysteria.
Israel’s Air Force is reportedly responding to the attack. There is the possibility that this attack could be related to terrorists who were killed by the IDF yesterday in response to rocket fire aimed at the IDF. This also follows Israel’s seizure of a major shipment of weapons from Iran. Just less than an hour before the attack, David Cameron had finished a speech addressing the Israeli Knesset.
Bridges for Peace has a very personal relationship with the families that live in the cities within rocket range of Gaza as we deliver food and supplies every week throughout the southern parts of Israel.
Please pray for the people in the towns of Sderot, Kfar Maimon, Netivot, Kfar Aza, the S’dot Negev Regional Council communities, Kibbutz Saad, Kibbutz Nachal Ohz, Alumim, Sharsheret, Tekuma, Sufah, Chulit, Nir Yitzchak, Nachal Ohz, Alumim, Beer Sheva, Ashkelon and surrounding area communities. Pray for Israel’s military and leaders as they respond to this attack. Pray for the soldiers who are manning the Iron Dome and are out in the elements of rain and hail as they work to protect the neighborhoods surrounding Gaza.
“I said to the Lord: “You are my God; hear the voice of my supplications, O Lord. O GOD the Lord, the strength of my salvation, You have covered my head in the day of battle. Do not grant, O Lord, the desires of the wicked; do not further his wicked scheme, lest they be exalted.” Psalm 140:6–8
